Alison's BBQ Ribs
Always having hungry boys at home, I make a ton of ribs. Usually on the weekends, with loads of leftovers for late night and between meal snacking! I scour the local flyers and use Flipp to see when and where ribs are on sale. And while everyone loves Back Ribs and St. Louis style, regular side ribs are far more economical and no one in my home says no to these!
Whether you are baking and BBQ'ing or pre-cooking then slow cooking (my current favourite method) - these ribs make everyone so happy!
Easy potatoes of any kind and slaw or green beans, completes the package.
Yield: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
- 2 kg pork ribs
- 3-4 tablespoons of your favourite rib rub
o I use one part onion powder, one part garlic powder, one part brown sugar (or coconut sugar)
o I also love this Chicken & Rib Rub from Pepper Tree Spice Co.
- Salt & Pepper
- 2-3 cups of your favourite BBQ sauce, homemade or bottled
- I've made my own in the past, but honestly, Diana's is great and often on sale!
Methods:
Traditional Oven Cooking + BBQ:
- Preheat oven to 250 F. Remove membrane from back of ribs and cut into 4 rib segments.
- Season the ribs with salt & pepper, then rub ribs generously with spice rub, and wrap in aluminum foil. Place on a baking sheet seam side up to keep the juices in the packet.
- Cook in the oven for 3 hours. OPTION: Separate fat from the juices that accumulated while cooking and mix the juice in with your BBQ sauce.
- Brush ribs generously with BBQ sauce and finish on the grill to caramelize BBQ sauce, about 5 minutes per side, basting with more sauce if desired
‘Shorter Oven’ + Slow Cooker (more planet-friendly!):
- Preheat oven to 425 F. Remove membrane from back of ribs and cut into segments that fit in your slow cooker.
- Season the ribs with salt & pepper, then rub ribs generously with spice rub.
- Place on a baking sheet – I use a silicone baking mat to keep cleaning easier.
- Bake for 15minutes, flip the ribs and repeat for another 15 minutes.
- Place the ribs into the slow cooker with meaty side towards the walls of the slow cookery.
- OPTION: Separate fat from the juices that accumulated while cooking and mix the juice in with your BBQ sauce. Cover ribs generously.
- Set the slow cooker for 4-6 hours on low and hit ‘start’.
- OPTION: Brush ribs with more BBQ sauce and finish on the grill to caramelize BBQ sauce, about 5 minutes per side.
